| About EditLife | |
HALF-LIFE was originally released in late 1998. It is lauded as one of the best games of all time for a number of reasons; and part of its replay value comes from how devastatingly easy it is to mod.
People haven't been playing nothing but Half-Life Single Player for these last seven years, after all. Using special tools released by the game's creators, casual players could modify the game to their own (often twisted) ends. Thus were born Counter-Strike, Day of Defeat, Rocket Crowbar...
So, using the ridiculously versatile Half-Life game as a base, players created whole new sub-games that have survived and thrived for so long that even Cher would be impressed. But players aren't restricted to making new sub-games; in addition to modding, players may partake of its younger brother--usually called, for whatever reason, editing. Instead of making new games as the modders do, an editor creates new content for games that exist. The wildly, unrighteously popular Counter-Strike map fy_iceworld was created at some (accursed) time in the past by a player with a map-making tool, for instance.
The ideas of modding and editing (and, unfortunately, fy_iceworld too) press onward through Half-Life 2, allowing the new Half-Life to be a base for Garry's Mod, Fortress Forever, and a few hundred others.
EDITLIFE is a combination of Edit, root of the gerund editing, and Life, the second half of the name of the game. (A hyphen between Edit and Life is perfectly legal, but hyphens within proper nouns and especially URLs tend to confuse people.) The implication is that whatever goes on here must entail both Half-Life 2 and the act of editing.
EditLife is intended as an editor's resource, maintained by fellow editors who know what they're talking about. Within these pages are helpful guides to creating maps, models, and textures--not just for Dystopia, or for Half-Life 2 Deathmatch, but for all mods.
Take off your coat and stay a while. Surely you'll find something useful. And drop by the forums if you have time--it's kind of lonesome there.
