[Mod's Web site]
Counter-Strike Source (CS:S) is the Source (HL2 engine) version of Counter-Strike, a Half-Life mod. The creators of both mods stress a certain degree of realism, so in CS games: players cannot fall from ungodly heights and live; weapons will kick when they're fired, decreasing accuracy; and quad damage, ray guns, invisibility, and aliens are out of the question.
CS:S is played in rounds usually only a couple of minutes in length. Players use money, attained by killing enemies and completing objectives, to buy weapons at the start of each round; each team then attempts to either wipe out the other or complete the objective, which consists of either planting a bomb at a target or rescuing hostages.
CS:S is not only multiplayer but tends to draw large crowds to one server. Because physical props are not expedient to gameplay, most maps will not contain many full-fledged physics objects (cf. HL2DM, in which physics objects are practically required). Map layout is very important: neither team should have a significantly easier time defending itself or attacking the other.
