[Mod's Web site]
Straight from the proverbial horse's mouth: Day of Defeat: Source features multiplayer, team-based gameplay set in the WWII European theatre of operations. Players choose a role and tackle goal-oriented missions based on historical operations.
DOD:S is played in rounds, either timed or indefinite. Each round usually consists of both teams trying to take over the map by commandeering all of the control points present in it. Before spawning for the first time, players choose a class (such as Support or Rifleman) that dictates the weapons that they spawn with. DOD:S stresses realism even more than Counter-Strike, so guns kick more once fired, and players take more fall damage. Ammo is even measured in clips instead of bullets.
DOD:S is multiplayer and draws large crowds, so gross overuse of detail in high-traffic areas is generally bad--though with proper optimization, even excessively detailed areas can render like a charm. Layout must be fair to both teams and allow for a number of chokepoints.
